How to play

Getting started

What do I need to play?

To play ice hockey, you will need ice skates, a hockey stick, protective gear (gloves, shin, elbow and shoulder pads, pants) and a helmet with a face cage. You can buy equipment new or second hand, or you can contact us to ask about borrowing equipment.

In accordance with International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rules, you must wear full protective equipment all times.

How do I learn to play?

We offer Development sessions on Sundays from 10.45-11.45am and Wednesdays 7.45-8.45pm, where you can learn skating and puck handling skills from our certified coaches. This program runs throughout most of with a couple of breaks in between - one in October when our season has finished and over the Christmas / New Year holiday period.

To participate in Development to see if it’s right for you, you can make use of our “Learn to Play” registration which allows the participant to attend our development sessions free of charge for 8 weeks. This registration is open to both children and adults who wish to learn to play.

For your first session, it’s recommended you join the Sunday session. We have loan gear available and if you wish to use this, please arrive 45 minutes (at the end of the rink that has the clock) before the session so we can help you get settled.

It is important to note that this begins from the date you register so hold off doing this until a couple of days before you can start. For your first session, you will need to attend on a Sunday.

You can register for “Learn to Play”, which provide you with complimentary insurance for the 8 weeks.

If you wish to borrow gear, please arrive 45 minutes before the session starts to be assisted. The gear is located down the clock end of the rink.

For questions on registration, contact our Registrar via email.

LCC Ice Rink runs the Aussie Skate program on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons during school term. It is recommended you learn the basic skills of ice skating before you progress to hockey development.

Membership

What membership do I need?

All LCC Saints Ice Hockey Club members must hold Ice Hockey NSW (IHNSW) membership to play in IHNSW-sanctioned competitions during the winter season. This membership provides basic insurance for players and membership to IHNSW and Ice Hockey Australia (IHA).

How much is membership and what others costs are involved?

Depending on the age group of the player, annual fees will range from $700-$900 for the season. This fee covers IHA, IHNSW and Saints fees.

LCC Saints members do not have to pay fees for home games, which are covered by annual player registration fees collected at the beginning of each season. You must also be a member of the Liverpool Catholic Club, which will provide you with access to the club and discounts that come with membership!

Players must also factor in ice time costs at other rinks, which are divided up amongst the team. These away game fees range from around $20-$30 per away game.

For more information, contact our Registrar.

Joining a team

How do I join a team?

Teams may hold tryouts prior to the start of the Winter Season to fill any available spots within the team. These tryouts will be advertised on our Facebook page throughout January and February.

Should you wish to join a team mid-season, please contact us.

How do I pick my player number?

If you are new and need a player number, or would like to change your player number, please contact the Registrar at registrar@lccsaints.com.au with your first three choices.

We do maintain a master list of players to ensure there are no clashes within teams, so it is important your player number approved by the Registrar!
